Sport and Extramural Activities

Grey Junior offers a wide variety of sports and extra-mural activities designed to nurture teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness while encouraging boys to explore their interests and talents. Our sports programme includes rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis, squash, swimming, water polo, athletics, cross country, and mountain biking. Boys also participate in chess, music ensembles, Art Club and other cultural activities, fostering creativity and intellectual growth.

In keeping with our commitment to holistic development, every boy is required to participate in at least one summer and one winter sport, ensuring balanced engagement throughout the year. Interhouse matches, interschool derby days, and National tournaments provide exciting opportunities for skill development and provide challenging competition. Whether excelling on the field, in the pool, on the courts or in creative pursuits, every boy is encouraged to engage fully and strive for personal and team success.

CODE OF SPORTSMANSHIP

Bad sportsmanship spoils the game and creates bad feeling among players and spectators.   It is our wish that all at Grey Junior will take the initiative in getting our house in order and, in so doing, set an example to other schools. Naturally, when we play our games we try our best to beat our opponents.  To do any less would be to rob them and ourselves of some of the enjoyment that we gain from playing sport.  However, we do not subscribe to the policy of “winning at all costs”.   The “costs” also include cheating, display of temper, over robust play, disputing the referee’s / umpire’s decision, fighting, gamesmanship, etc.  Unfortunately we see some of our international and provincial sportsmen indulging in these practices, a very poor example to our young sportsmen.  Let us not descend to this level.  “Happily, many of our leading sportsmen still know how to play the game!”

SOME GOLDEN RULES WHEN PLAYING SPORT

  1. Give of your best. Practise hard and take pride in your fitness. Never give in during a match as this spoils the game for your opponents and your teammates.
  2. Keep a sense of proportion. Remember it is only a game and not a war. It is not a major tragedy   for the school if we lose.
  3. Get to know the rules and abide by them. Don’t try to gain unfair advantage by breaking the rules deliberately in the hope that you will get away with it. This is cheating.
  4. Accept the referee’s/umpire’s decision without question or hesitation. Never show irritation, disagreement or disgust. Remember that even the best referees/umpires make mistakes and bear in mind that they are often doing the job out of the goodness of their heart.
  5. A good sportsman exercises self-control. He plays the ball and not the man. Leave it to the  referee to sort out over robust play.
  6. Do not indulge in displays of “temperament”, such as throwing your racket or bat, shaking your   head, etc.
  7. It is unsporting to look for excuses for your defeats, for example “blaming the pitch, the   umpire, the wind or the absence of one of your players
  8. Show courtesy and friendliness towards visiting players.
  9. Take pride in being neat and properly dressed for your sport. Treat all equipment and facilities with the utmost care.

Phys Ed and Ball Skills

Physical Education (Phys Ed) and Ball Skills at Grey Junior are integral to fostering physical fitness, coordination, and teamwork among students. Through a structured program tailored to different age groups, boys develop core motor skills, agility, and endurance in a supportive environment. Ball Skills sessions focus on fundamental techniques like passing, catching, dribbling, and shooting, forming a strong foundation for future participation in team sports such as rugby, cricket, hockey, and soccer. These activities emphasize not only physical development but also sportsmanship, discipline, and confidence, reflecting Grey Junior’s holistic approach to nurturing both body and character

Camps and Excursions

Camps and excursions at Grey Junior are integral to the school’s commitment to holistic education, blending learning with memorable outdoor experiences. These activities are thoughtfully tailored to different Grades. For example, Grade 5s attend camp at African Imprint in Kirkwood, where they engage in activities fostering teamwork and personal growth. Grade 6s venture to Hobbiton on Hogsback, emphasizing leadership and outdoor exploration, while Grade 7s participate in the Leaders in Life program in Addo, focusing on leadership development and personal growth.

Younger Grades also benefit from enriching excursions, such as the Grade 4 Heritage Trail and farm tours with Bushpig Adventures, and the Grade 3 hands-on culinary experiences at Pikanini Chefs. Grade 2s enjoy safaris at Kragga Kamma Game Park and engage with nature through gardening and wildlife education, while Grade 1s celebrate milestones like their 100th school day with interactive treasure hunts and special events. These excursions provide students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom while building bonds with peers and teachers
