Grey Boys’ Primary School has a rich history dating back over 160 years. Its roots can be traced to 1856 when Sir George Grey, Governor of the Cape Colony, approved an Act of Parliament to establish the Grey Institute. The school, comprising then of an elementary and a high school section, opened its doors in 1859 with just 40 students in a building situated on the Donkin Reserve in Port Elizabeth.
By the early 1900s, the city was expanding rapidly, and the school soon outgrew its original location. In 1915, the high school section of the Grey Institute relocated to its current site in Mill Park. The move was initially met with scepticism, as the area was considered too far from town. However, the new location allowed for growth and the addition of modern facilities that would serve the school for generations.
When Grey High moved out of the Institute buildings in 1915, the Elementary School that had been scattered across various venues close to the Grey Institute due to space constraints, moved back into the vacated Grey Institute buildings in Belmont Terrace. Miss Alice Dawes, who had been principal of the Elementary School since 1908, continued in the role after the move.
By 1926 numbers at had become known as the Grey Institute Preparatory School had grown steadily, and classes were still spread amongst the various buildings. Plans were put in place to build a new Preparatory School adjacent to the High School in Mill Park. The Principal at the beginning of 1930 was Miss Ellam who later married and became Mrs Daroll.
On December 9, 1929, Charles Mackay laid the foundation stone for the new school in Mill Park. Mr Edwin Draycott, a High School master for 18 years, was appointed Headmaster. A huge crowd was present on July 26, 1930, when the school, which cost £13 456, was officially opened by the mayor, Councillor James Scott.
In 1931 the name Grey Institute formerly fell away and replaced by Grey High School with a Rector and Grey Primary School with a Headmaster. These names would again later be referred to by the Cape Education Department as Grey Boys’ Primary School and Grey Boys’ High School. The Primary School would also adopt the shortened name of Grey Junior.
Throughout its history, Grey Junior has consistently expanded and modernized. The school has developed an impressive range of facilities, and these additions reflect the school’s commitment to providing a balanced education that nurtures body, mind, and spirit.
