SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

community responsibility and kindness

Grey Junior School actively participates in various social outreach projects that foster a sense of community responsibility and kindness among its learners. Initiatives include regular charity drives, which collect essential items for distribution to local communities in need. The boys also recycle and more recently have been actively involved in the rhino conservation effort through Olli (One Life, Love It).

In addition, Grey Junior hosts events like the Children’s Music Concert for less-fortunate children, and the Golden Oldies Concert, specifically tailored to entertain and honour senior citizens. These outreach efforts are deeply embedded in the school’s values, encouraging boys to contribute meaningfully to the broader community while cultivating empathy and respected.

Community Concerts

At Grey Junior, music is not just about performance—it’s about giving back. Throughout the year, our talented musicians take part in community concerts that bring joy to others. The Golden Oldies concert remains a cherished tradition, where our choirs and bands perform for elderly members of the community, filling the room with music and nostalgia. Our boys have also participated in outreach concerts, including performances for underprivileged children, demonstrating the power of music to uplift and unite. These events foster a spirit of compassion and remind our boys of the impact they can have beyond the school gates.

Recycling

Grey Junior is committed to sustainability, and our recycling initiatives play a key role in promoting environmental responsibility. Unused worksheets and gently used stationery are donated to less privileged schools, ensuring that resources are not wasted but rather put to good use. Collection drives for used sports equipment and clothing that the boys have outgrown not only promote reuse but also support those in need. By involving the boys in these efforts, we instil lifelong habits of mindful consumption, waste reduction, and social responsibility.

BOTTLE TOP COLLECTION

A small act can make a big difference! At Grey Junior, we encourage our boys to collect plastic bottle tops, which are collected in a huge heart-shaped cage. This simple yet powerful initiative teaches our boys that even the smallest contributions can have a life-changing impact. Through their collective efforts, our boys are actively participating in the efforts to reuse plastic and reduce the amount of non-biodegradable plastic in landfills. Much of what is recycled at Grey Junior is turned into plastic benches, many of which can be seen around the school.

EASTER EGG COLLECTION

Grey Junior School is proud to support community outreach initiatives that instil values of generosity and kindness in our boys. Every year, our Easter egg collection drive receives overwhelming support, with thousands of eggs donated. These are distributed to several SAPS precincts across the city, who in turn hand them out to learners at various schools as part of their community awareness efforts. Through this partnership, our boys play a small but meaningful role in building trust and fostering goodwill within our broader community.

Civvies Days

Civvies Days at Grey Junior are about more than just swapping uniforms for casual clothes—they are an opportunity to support meaningful causes. Whether it’s Red T-shirt Day in aid of CHOC, raising funds for children facing life-threatening illnesses, or our beloved Bok Fridays, which build school spirit, each Civvies Day fosters a sense of unity and generosity. These fun-filled days remind our boys that giving back can be both impactful and enjoyable, reinforcing the importance of kindness and community engagement.

THE OLLI FOUNDATION

At Grey Junior, we believe in nurturing a sense of responsibility towards the environment and its wildlife. Through our involvement with the One Land Love It (OLLI) Foundation, our boys actively support rhino conservation efforts, learning about the importance of protecting endangered species. Whether through fundraising concerts, awareness campaigns, or participation in the OLLI Save the Rhino Art Competition, our boys are encouraged to use their talents to make a difference. By partnering with OLLI, we instil in our boys a deep respect for nature and a commitment to preserving it for future generations.
